Cervus elaphus - red deer
Your branches
like tree rings of woods
inscribe within themselves
the changing of seasons
the passage of time.
Male red deer develop impressive antlers as they mature, while females do not grow them. Antlers are made of bone tissue, and when they start growing on the heads of young males, they are not branched, but they branch out as time passes. Every winter, antlers are shed, and new ones grow in spring. The appearance of antlers provides insight into the age of the individual, as with each passing year, the antlers spread and branch.
Part of the "Tundra" subseries in the expansive collection "From Tundra to Tropical Rainforest," each painting is accompanied by its unique narrative, showcasing animals and their stories across Earth's diverse biomes. This collection represents my most extensive body of work yet, celebrating the resilience and beauty of wildlife worldwide.
